Our article in American Banker on the phenomena of cyber hackers taking on ISIS and terrorist financing, has generated lots of interesting feedback from readers from banks, in cybersecurity and among counter-terrorist financing experts. The biggest concern was the concept that cyber hackers may target banks in the Middle East that are used for terrorist financing of ISIS, regardless of whether those institutions allow their services to be used deliberately or unwittingly. The frustrating aspect about terrorist financing, particularly in respect of ISIS, is that significant portions of it does flow through our financial system, and continues to do so today. Also frustrating is the length of time it has taken social media platforms to get serious about shutting down terrorist propaganda published on their sites, particularly since those same sites are used for raising funds for ISIS.
